Inspired by nature, the artist Galatea revolutionized the process of pearl culturing in 2001 and produced the "Mercy Pearl". Not sure whether to call it a pearl or a gemstone - it is a combination of the two. It is created by inserting gemstone beads into a black lipped oyster, causing the oyster to secrete nacre around the gemstone ( a natural defense mechanism when an irritant is present inside the oyster). After the pearl is harvested, the nacre is carved away revealing the gemstone beneath.
"When an oyster swallows a grain of sand it feels the
discomfort, so it begins to ease the pain by applying a coast of
nacre (pearl). It is during this healing process that it
creates a beautiful pearl. THis is like life itself.
It is easy to love in good times, but it takes courage to love
through the discomfort of our lives. The gemstone
represents the grain of sand, beauty inside and pearl evokes an
aura of love, courage and healing. It is this unique
transformation that has given birth to the 'Mercy Pearl' Beauty
